A Busy Saturday (and Sunday)

Saturday, May 1, 2010
10:00AM After a busy morning of getting ready, we stopped by my parents' house to see my aunt who was in town briefly

11:00AM We took the DART Rail (despite Aaron's frustration with DART) or as Rai calls it the "Choo-choo Train" to the Dallas Arts District for an Asian festival

11:30AM We arrived at the Asian festival for a few children's activities (including face painting by the Crow Collection of Asian Art) and made our way through the row of booths. I have to admit that I wasn't too pleased with the large quantities of companies selling products and services. My idea of a festival doesn't involve shoving brochures in my face while we're trying to find one of the few booths with food. We did find a good place, and Aaron even tried Catfish stirfry.

It was helpful that the Nasher Sculpture Museum was free for the day and had a very child-friendly indoor and outdoor collection.

3:00PM We started to head back to the DART Rail Station and found an NAACP Rally for Immigration Reform. That explained the 5-7 helicopters we saw hovering in the area.

And as usual, Rai was fast asleep on the DART Rail and stayed asleep in the car and in his bed after we got home.

6:00PM (8:00AM Sunday - Korean Time) With the help of two wonderful Korean students, we had a memorable phone conversation with someone special in our lives. We save each phone conversation on video and look forward to showing Rai the videos over and over when he's old enough to better understand this special opportunity.

7:00AM Mowing the Lawn!
Only a few weeks ago, Rai was scared of the lawn mower and anything else that made a loud noise, but just recently, Rai rediscovered his toy lawn mower and has been adamant about playing with it outside. So this morning, he got his first opportunity to play with his lawn mower as Aaron mowed the lawn. I got a bit more gardening done, but our front yard needs much more work. The original flower beds put in by the home builders were not dug properly, so the roots of all our bushes are caught in the clay soil while the grass has slowly creeped in. It's a good thing Rai likes to pull weeds. :-)

10:00AM Tent-Making
Rai and Aaron had a fun morning building a tent in Rai's playroom.

12:00PM Rai's Afternoon with Auntie Amy (and our afternoon out)
Rai had a great afternoon playing soccer, coloring, and just spending time with his favorite aunt. Aaron and I went to Adventure Landing (our local Putt-Putt-type place) for lunch, miniature golf, bumper boats, and arcades. We promised to bring Rai back a surprise and managed to win enough tickets for a toy samurai sword, a small plastic airplane and car, a little kazoo, and a rope ring. Yes, the samurai sword is too big for him, but Rai didn't even realize it was a toy sword. Instead, he called it a weed eater. Can you tell he's stuck on mowing the lawn?

6:00PM The First Soccer Game of the Night
Aaron plays two soccer games on Sundays with his sister. (He's in three leagues, but the other league is on Wednesday nights.) Although the second soccer game is generally past Rai's bedtime, we usually make the first soccer game. Rai was a bit tired due to a short nap, but he did great watching the game. After the game, we stopped by a nearby park to eat our dinner (sandwiches I had packed earlier) and play on the playground. By 8:00PM, he was nearly asleep on the playground, so I got him changed and took him home. Needless to say, he was asleep within the first ten minutes of the 45 minute card ride home.
